Riding my motorcycle is right up there in the top ten things I truly enjoy in life. So the farther and longer I ride, the better I feel. The Iron Butt Association has a certificate program for those who achieve certain milestones in riding and all of this is explained on the IBA web site. When a rider receives the certificate it's proof-positive that a rider actually did the ride they are claiming. The IBA audits each ride and requires start and finish witnesses, computer generated receipts, a mileage log and other forms of documentation to confirm a ride. I've only certified three rides, some members have dozens of certificates. To join the IBA, which currently has over 25,000 members, a rider must document riding 1,000 miles in 24 hours. The web page has examples of other rides including 'extreme' rides of 1,500 miles in 24 hours, 100,000 miles in 12 months and ten 1,000 mile days in a row (called a ten tenths). Quite simply, the certified rides are actually excuses to get on the bike and hit the road. Tired of riding the same roads all the time? Try the National Parks Tour where you must visit at least 50 national parks or monuments in 25 states within a year. There are lots of similar challenges. The basic long distance ride that's required to become a member of the Iron Butt Association is called a Saddlesore 1000.
